BALTIMORE, MD --- Freshman outside hitter Khaila Donaldson and sophomore middle blocker Whitney Fields combined for 22 kills to pace the Howard women's volleyball team in a 3-0 sweep of Morgan State on Friday evening. Donaldson recorded her 10th double-double of the season, going for match-highs of 12 kills and 11 digs. Fields logged 10 kills - her second double digit kill performance - and hit .500 for the match.Senior middle blocker Assata Conway hit .444 with nine kills and three blocks (all assists) and senior setter Stephanie Shultis had 33 of the team's 39 assists. The 33 ties and 14 lead changes in a three-match set showed that Howard could battle with an opponent before pulling away. In set one, Howard (17-9, 10-1 MEAC) and Morgan (13-12, 6-6 MEAC) tied six times by the time the score was 10-10. MSU would go up 12-10 but Howard responded with a 15-7 run to close the set.
Set two saw both teams deadlocked at a later juncture. With the game tied at 12-12, the Lady Bison used a 12-5 run to take their biggest lead of the match (24-17) before holding on for the set victory.
Morgan kept even closer in set three, tying things with Howard even later in the set (16-16) and pulling within two (22-20). However, kills by Donaldson & Shultis and a service ace by junior outside hitter closed out the match for good.
Howard will complete its MEAC slate on Sunday, November 9 with a 3 p.m. matchup with Coppin State. The game will also serve as Senior Day for six Lady Bison playing their final game at Burr Gymnasium -
