Box Score WASHINGTON, DC --- The last home game for six seniors that laid the foundation for a new era of Howard women's volleyball provided a happy ending in more ways than one.
Howard earned its ninth straight victory with a 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 26-28, 25-18) win over the Coppin State Lady Eagles on Sunday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium. The victory ensured the Lady Bison will earn at least a share of the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division title with an 11-1 conference record.
Freshman outside hitter
Khaila Donaldson and senior middle blocker
Assata Conway each recorded 11 kills on the day. Donaldson also added 11 digs, pushing her streak of games with double digit kills to 12 games and her double-double streak to three. Conway blocked four total attacks in the match - two solo and two assisted. Senior libero
Allyson Lods shared the game high in digs with 17 and senior setter
Stephanie Shultis had 42 assists in the match.Â
Fellow senior
Alexis Skinner saw action in her last game at The Burr, going a perfect 2-of-2 on attached and recorded a pair of digs as well.
The most pleasant surprise of the day was senior
Destinee Harrison being inserted into the starting lineup. Harrison suffered a season-ending knee injury on September 19 against William & Mary but had progressed enough to safely record the game's first serve - which led to a kill for Conway - and sub out immediately after.
Three other Lady Bison posted at least seven kills in the game - Shultis (nine), sophomore outside hitter
Katherine Broussard (eight) and sophomore middle blocker
Whitney Fields (seven).
Besides losing a hotly contested third set, Howard (18-9, 11-1 MEAC) had no issues separating from Coppin State (13-13, 7-5 MEAC). Sets one and four only saw one tie combined and set two saw Howard outscore Coppin 19-10 after the game was tied at 6-6.
The Lady Bison will conclude the regular season with a non-conference matchup against the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday, November 14 at 6 p.m. in Newark, NJ.
