WASHINGTON, DC --- Coming into the latest installment of the Howard – Hampton women's volleyball series, the numbers 6 and 13 held negative connotations for the Lady Bison in regards to their recent history against the Lady Pirates.
Over the last six seasons – and 13 total games – Howard has failed to get past the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions.
That is, until today.
The Howard women's volleyball team survived a late rally and held off Hampton for a 3-2 (25-20, 27-25, 21-25, 23-25, 15-10) victory on Sunday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.
Win the win, Howard (16-9, 9-1 MEAC) moved into first place in the MEAC Northern Division, extending its current win streak to seven games while snapping Hampton's five game streak.
The last time Howard defeated Hampton (15-10, 8-1 MEAC) in volleyball was on October 29, 2008. The Lady Bison actually swept the home-and-home series with the Lady Pirates that season without surrendering a set.
Three Lady Bison players posted at least 13 kills, led by sophomore middle blocker
Whitney Fields' 17-kill performance. Freshman outside hitter
Khaila Donaldson's 14 kills gave her double digits in 10 straight games and her 13 digs gave her a team-leading ninth double-double
Senior middle blocker
Assata Conway had the most efficient hitting match of the trio, posting a .444 percentage (13 kills, 1 error, 27 attempts) while senior setter
Stephanie Shultis assisted on a season-high 54 points and sophomore outside hitter
Katherine Broussard dug out a match-high and season-best 21 attacks.
