Women's Volleyball Stops Coppin State, 3-1

Shultis sets Howard assists record in victory

BALTIMORE, MD --- The Howard women's volleyball team moved to 4-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with a 3-1 victory over the Coppin State Eagles Sunday afternoon in the CSU Auxiliary Gym.

Howard (11-9, 4-1 MEAC) had a trio of players reach double figures in kills - freshman outside hitter Khaila Donaldson (15); senior middle blocker Assata Conway (13); and sophomore outside hitter Katherine Broussard (10). Broussard also had a team-high 14 digs for her fourth double double of the season, second on the team to Donaldson's eight. Conway led all players with 7 total blocks (all assists).

The major highlight of the day came from senior setter Stephanie Shultis, whose 45 assists gave her Howard's career assists record. Shultis now has 2,742 assists, passing former Lady Bison Shannon Grant (2003-06) and her 2,705 assists.

Shultis is averaging 9.66 assists/set this season (4th in the MEAC), with her numbers increasing to a league-best 11.76 assists/set in conference matches. She has posted 15 games with 30+ assists, six with 40 or more and a 50-assist performance against UMES on October 3.

The first set saw Howard lead Coppin (9-10, 3-3 MEAC) 6-2 early and 16-15 in the latter stages but the Eagles doubled up the Lady Bison 10-5 to win the set 25-21.

Howard would respond by sweeping the next three sets, hitting .333 with 43 of their 58 total kills in the final sets. By contrast, the Lady Bison limited CSU to a .173 hitting percentage in the last three sets after hitting at a .406 clip in set one.

HU returns to Burr Gymnasium on Thursday, October 16 for a 7 p.m. matchup with Morgan State. The match will serve as Howard's DIG PINK / Breast Cancer Awareness match so fans are encouraged to wear pink in support.
