Women's Soccer Prevails In Double OT Over Jackson State

Vaughan scores game winner in final minute

JACKSON, MS ---Some late-game magic was needed, but Howard's magical run in the SWAC continues.

Sophomore midfielder Sara Vaughan scored a goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to push the Lady Bison women's soccer team past the Jackson State Lady Tigers, 1-0, in double overtime Friday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Complex.

The victory holds great significance for Howard (6-7-1, 5-0 SWAC). The win extends the longest streak in head coach Brent Leiba's tenure at HU (six games); guarantees at least a .500 record in the team's first season in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC); and matches Leiba's highest single-season win total of six (set last season - 6-7-2).

Jackson State fell to 5-6-3 (2-1-2 SWAC) with the loss.

The winning goal was set up after a Jackson State foul gave a free kick to the Lady Bison. Sophomore forward Carmen Suarez's ball sailed right to Vaughan, who put home her second goal of the season with 20 seconds left in the second overtime.

JSU gave Howard a strong challenge as the Lady Tigers matched HU shot for shot in the game (16 to 16, six to six shots on goal) and took three times as many corners as the Lady Bison (nine to three).
