Gonzalez, Lady Bison Rally To Outlast Bethune

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, FL --- For the second time in three games, the fate of the Howard women's basketball team came down to the wire; and for the second time, the Lady Bison came out on top.

A last minute score by sophomore center Victoria Gonzalez proved to be the difference in Howard's 47-45 victory over Bethune-Cookman University on Monday evening at Moore Gymnasium.

Including her game winner, Gonzalez posted a game-high 18 points for Howard (8-11, 4-2 MEAC), the sixth time this season she has led the team in scoring. Gonzalez shot 7-of-15 from the field, hit 4-of-5 from the line and had seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jasmine Hill nearly claimed a double-double with her line of 10 points and eight rebounds.

Neither team found itself able to gain separation early on as four of the game's six ties occured in the first ten minutes of the contest.

HU saw itself holding on to a slim 14-13 lead at the 8:17 mark before BCU closed the period outscoring Howard 11-6 to carry a 24-20 advantage into the locker room.

Another 11-6 run by Bethune during the second half gave the Wildcats its largest lead of the game, 35-26, with 13:20 remaining.

Howard's response was a 19-10 run over the next 11:23, tying the game at 45-45 with 1:41 left on the clock on a layup by junior forward Cheyenne Brown.

BCU's next two offensive trips resulted in Howard stops and HU would control the ball with 50 seconds.with a chance to take the lead. After a pair of missed shots, Howard would settle in and look to run its offense. Redshirt freshman Te'Shya Heslip, who knocked down the game-winning shot in Howard's home overtime win over UMES last week, attacked the basket on the right side and kicked the ball out to Gonzalez, who drove the lane from rattled in the go-ahead shot.
