Washington, DC—The Howard University men's basketball team will be trying to recover from a disappointing 56-54 home loss to Savannah State this past Monday when it hosts the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at 4 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (3-15, 1-2 in the MEAC) gave a spirited effort and did enough good things to pull out a victory but it came down to missed opportunities for a young team in a tight game that was ultimately decided at the free throw line.
"This is the first game since the Delaware State game (December 15) where it was close down the stretch," explained Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. Â "We were able to win in nearly every category except at the free throw line and that is where we came up a little short."
Howard came into the game, shooting almost 70 percent as a team from the charity stripe. Â But the Bison made only 50 percent for the game while the Tigers converted on 73 percent.
The Hawks (2-13, 0-3 in the MEAC) have dropped 11 in a row. Â Howard swept them last season.
"I have said all along that I love this group," said Nickelberry. Â "I really feel that the effort against Savannah State will carry over to UMES game and the rest of the season."
