Howard Hosts American in Home Opener

The Howard University women's soccer team will try to get its first win of the season when its hosts American University in the home opener for the Lady Bison on Friday. The action gets underway at 7 pm in Greene Stadium.

Howard (0-0-1) is coming off a hard-fought scoreless tie to Longwood in Farmville, VA on Tuesday when it overcame the heat and humidity and a huge disadvantage in the statistics to hold the hosts scoreless.

"I was very proud of our team," said Howard head coach Brent Leiba. "It was a hard-fought match. We faced some challenges with the travel to the game and the high humidity, but we persevered and had chances to win."

Despite being outshot on shots overall, 14-5 and shots on goal, 9-4, the improving Lady Bison never folded and displayed great resiliency. Junior Kyra Dickinson was impressive in goal, logging all 110 minutes while recording nine saves.

"Dickinson is a fantastic goalkeeper," praised Leiba. "You want your goalie to keep you in the game and she not only does that, she gives us a chance to win."

In American (0-2), the Lady Bison will play a tested team which has two matches under its belt, having dropped a 1-0 decision to George Washington on August 23 and to UMBC, 2-1 at home on August 25. This will be their third match in seven days.

"It is great to be home," added Leiba, referring to the team's four-game home stand.

The Eagles defeated Howard, 2-1 last year at American.
