Bison Look To Finish Strong in Non-Conference Match

Houston, TX—The Howard University football team will be looking to close the 2013 season in good fashion when it takes on the Tigers of Texas Southern University from the Southwestern Athletic Conference in a non-conference match-up at 3 pm.

The Bison (4-6) are coming off a 42-14 win over Savannah State at home last week and with two games remaining, they could salvage the season with a .500 record.

We have a lot of young players who have grown over the season," says Howard head coach Ray Petty. "It is reflected in our record. But we are playing better now and they feel they know how to win. We are trying to finish strong and set the tone for the future."

Howard has followed the lead of its junior quarterback Greg McGhee, who is playing as well as anyone in the conference. Against the Tigers, the 6-3, 208-pound native of Pittsburgh, PA, rushed for 148 yards and two TDs and passed for another 326 yards and two more TDs.

Greg is playing at a very high level now," says Petty. "With our situation of injuries at the running back position, he has had to take on more of the load. He is doing a great job of understanding what we want to do as well as what the defense is doing."

McGhee has been aided by the strong play of a young offensive line that has not allowed a sack in the past three games and ranks among the nation's best in that category with only 11 on the season. Their blocking has allowed McGhee to post career numbers in rushing and versatility in the passing game, having completed to 18 different receivers.

Defensively, the Bison have shown made some strides over the season. A young defensive line that features only one senior, a solid linebacking corp and a much improved secondary has helped Howard win three of its last four games.

The Tigers (2-8) have had their ups and down this season and are coming off a 20-17 loss to Mississippi Valley State last week The two teams have met four times, with the series tied at 2-2.

We don't know a lot about them," says Petty. "I know that they are young in some spots, but they have talent. We just have to go out and continue what we have been doing the past few weeks."

Following this game, Howard will close out the season with a game at Hampton next Saturday at 1 pm.
