CROSS COUNTRY PERFORMS WELL AT DELAWARE STATE CLASSIC

DOVER, DE --- The Howard men's and women's cross country programs took 1st and 3rd place respectively at Friday's Delaware State Classic.

The Bison men scored 37 points to take top honors in a total field of seven schools - including five other MEAC institutions. Junior Elisha Metto paced the men's field with a time of 26:43.6 and was one of six Howard runners in the top 30.

"Elisha is running well... This was another race from where he led from gun to finish," said Howard Head Coach Marc Harrison.

The Lady Bison finished in third place with 97 points, just behind Morgan State (30) and women's winner Hampton (26).

"The ladies are getting better each week. We're young and made some young mistakes but we will be ready for a strong showing at MEACs in two weeks," added Harrison.

Freshman Rori Ann Nalls barely missed the top 10, logging a 12th place time of 19:42.3 to lead Howard's six-runner contingent.

Howard's next competition will be the 2013 MEAC Championships on Saturday, October 26 on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

SWIMMING & DIVING TEAMS OPEN 2013-14 CAMPAIGN WITH LOCAL TRI-MEET

TOWSON MD --- Traveling to Towson, Maryland for their first two competitions of the season, the Howard Bison swimmers faced the host Towson Tigers and the Hood College Blazers on Saturday afternoon.  Despite a number of terrific swims from a variety of racers, the Bison men and women fell to both institutions.
The HU men lost to Towson 234-36 and to Hood College 202-53.  The Lady Bison fell to the Lady Tigers 2395-40 and to the Lady Blazers 147.5-101.5.
The three brightest spots for the Bison came on the women's side. Freshman Ayana Cox (Atlantic City, NJ) scored her first collegiate victory of her career.  Her time of 2:04.56 was good enough to defeat Hood College in the 200 freestyle.  Senior Janai Ederaine (Corona, CA) took first place honors against the Lady Blazers in the 100 freestyle.  With Cox finishing second to the senior, Ederaine's time of 57.69 was good for the Lady Bison's second victory of the afternoon and their only 1-2 finish of the contest.
Ederaine anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay against the Lady Blazers, as well.  Along with fellow senior Ashley Douglas (Missouri City, TX), junior Caleah Gregoire (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) and sophomore Benta Horton-Gee (Baltimore, MD), the Lady Bison closed the meet with a winning time of 4:00.42.
The Bison will next travel to American University on Friday afternoon to renew their rivalry with the Eagles.  On Saturday, the Bison will head to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI and North Carolina A&T.

STOKES TAKES SINGLES FLIGHT AS WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPETES AT NAVY INVITATIONAL

ANNAPOLIS, MD --- Senior Katelyn Stokes won the "A" singles flight at the Naval Academy's Navy Blue & Gold Invitational this weekend. Stokes, the number one seed in the flight, breezed through the tournament without relinquishing a set. She was victorious over Navy's Darien Sears in the final 7-5, 6-3.

The tournament used an abbreviated format after moving indoors due to rain throughout the weekend. All three Howard doubles teams went 2-1 losing in the semifinals of their respective brackets. In other singles action, Umarah MughneeStacey Roheman, Gabby Moxey and Audra Bell all reached the quarterfinals before losing.

"We played well against seven of the top teams in our region and though there is plenty of work to do, I felt this was an excellent prep for the ITA's next weekend," said Coach Howard Head Coach Larry Strickland.

Howard will compete in the ITA Regional Tournament, which begins on Friday, October 18 on the campus of the University of Virginia. Stokes and Mughnee have qualified for singles and Stokes and Roheman have qualified for doubles. Mughnee and Ama Osei will travel as members of the alternates list.

MEN'S SOCCER REMAINS WINLESS AFTER LOSS TO FLORIDA ATLANTIC

BOCA RATON, FL --- A lack of offensive opportunities prevented the Howard University men's soccer team from winning its first game of the season as the Bison Booters dropped a 2-0 decision to Florida Atlantic University on Sunday afternoon.

Howard (0-11) allowed FAU (6-1-2) to take a season-high 17 shots; conversely, HU posted its third lowest shot output of the season (four shots), managing only one shot in the first half. In the 37th minute, the Owls would score both of their goals within a 30-second span, the first on a cross after a corner kick and the second on a breakaway.

Junior goalkeeper Eric Hamilton stopped seven of the nine shots he faced in his 90 minutes of action for the Bison.

Howard will take the road again on Tuesday, October 15 when the Bison travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on Liberty University.

VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS COPPIN STATE AT HOME

WASHINGTON, DC --- In the final home contest of the weekend, Howard Volleyball defeated the Coppin State Eagles 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) in MEAC North Division action on Sunday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium. The Bison improved to 15-6 on the season and maintained their second place position in the division with their 4-1 conference record. CSU's record fell to 6-14 (3-3 MEAC) with the loss.

Junior Assata Conway hit. .333 on and led all players in kills (14) and total attacks (30). Freshman Katherine Broussard added 11 kills for Howard. Junior Stephanie Shultis had 38 assists and all but one player recorded a dig in the match, led by junior Allyson Lods' eight.

Both teams had the same amount of digs (35) but the Lady Bison bested the Eagles in every other major statistical category in the three-set victory:

HOWARD STATS COPPIN
46 KILLS 28
.327 ATTACK % .090
41 ASSISTS 27
10 BLOCKS 6
8 TOTAL BLOCKS 4

The .090 attack percentage Howard's defense allowed was a stark contrast to Coppin's previous two matches, where the Eagles hit over .300.

HU will play the fourth match of its current eight-game home stand on Tuesday, October 15 when the Lady Bison welcome non-conference opponent Bucknell University to Burr. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
