Howard Drops Fourth Straight in Home Loss to Bethune Cookman

Washington, DC---Bethune Cookman showed why it is rated the Number 1 team in Black College football as it dominated Howard 27-6 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Greene Stadium before 1,052.

The nationally ranked Wildcats (5-1, 2-0 in the MEAC) rolled up 480 yards on offense while limiting the Bison to a season-low 186 yards of total offense.

"They are the Number 1 in the conference for a reason," said Howard Coach Ray Petty.  "We knew coming in that they have a very good football team.  From their formations to down-and -distance situations, they are consistent.  That's what makes them a good football team."

Bethune Cookman set the tone early, forcing Howard (1-5, 0-3 in the MEAC) into the first of several three and outs and proceeded to drive 76 yards in 10 plays with Anthony Jordan capping off the drive with a 4-yard run with 9:06 on the clock in the first quarter.

The Wildcats forced a fumble on the Bison's ensuing possession that was recovered at the Howard 25-yard line.  It took three plays to go the distance with Jordan bowling over Bison tacklers en route to an 11-yard run that made it 14-0 at the 7:00 mark.

From there, the Wildcats began to bog down a bit as a result of penalties (9 for 85 yards) and turnovers (three), but the Howard offense, which came into the game averaging almost 400 yards per game, could not take advantage of the lapse.

"We couldn't execute on third down," said Howard junior quarterback Greg McGhee.  "We had a couple of dropped passes and a couple of missed reads which resulted in three and outs.  Their defensive line had a lot to do with that.  They did a great job of applying pressure."

Howard had a chance to get closer when it forced a fumble deep in Bethune Cookman territory.  But the Wildcat defense stood tall and forced a 39-yard John Fleck field goal with 6:53 in the second quarter.

The Bison would get yet another break when freshman defensive end Marquese Blanchard returned a Bethune Cookman fumble to the Wildcats' seven-yard line.  But again, the Wildcat defense kept the Bison out of the end zone and Howard had to settle for a 14-6 deficit at the half as Fleck converted a 24-yard field goal.

In the second half, Bethune Cookman controlled the clock by using its vaunted running attack, which came into the game averaging almost 250 yards per game.  Isodore Jackson (65 yards, 1 TD), was one of eight players who took turns grinding out first downs.  And when the Wildcats were not effectively  running the ball, their three quarterbacks -Quentin Williams, Jackie Wilson and Broderick Waters- combined to have an efficient day, completing 17 of 25 between them for 272 yards.

"The Number 1 thing that we wanted to do was play fundamental football," said BCU Head coach Brian Jenkins.  "We wanted to make sure that when we got in on a play, we made the tackle and when we played our coverages, we played them correctly.  Most importantly, we did not want to give their quarterback a chance to extend plays."  McGhee was held to a season-low 122 yards of total offense after leading the MEAC in that category.

For good measure, Bethune Cookman closed out the scoring with a third quarter drive of 61 yards on 10 plays that was finished by Jackson on a 13-yard run and a fourth quarter 75-yard drive that took 12 plays.  Both drives consumed five minutes as the Wildcats won the time of possession battle, 38 minutes to 22.
