VB Assistant Coach Julian White

Julian Welsh-White

In March 2018, Julian Welsh-White joined Howard University as its an assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at South Carolina during the 2017 season.
 
“Julian is an experienced player and coach that will help us take the next step in our development,” Kupferberg stated. “He has a history of being involved with successful programs and knows how to get the most out of his teams.”

In Spriing 2021, he guided Jessica Bolden and Amari Patterson to All-MEAC Rookie honors.

During the 2019 campaign, Howard went 20-13 (14-1 MEAC) en route to its fifth consecutive MEAC Championship and fifth straight NCAA appearance. Three Bison earned league postseason honors: Tamar Wells (MEAC Freshman of the Year; All-MEAC); Jurnee Tipton (All-MEAC); and Kira Porter (All-MEAC).

In his first year, Welsh-White was instrumental in recruiting new talent and developing current players. With an established and reputable program, Howard volleyball won its fourth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. Additionally, Howard placed four players on the All-MEAC team and six on the All-MEAC Academic Team. Setter Tamia Dockery was selected MEAC Player of the Year and also named AVCA and VolleyballMag.com Honorable Mention.
 
Along with work on South Carolina’s scout team, Julian helped train their middles. With his help, sophomore Claire Edwards doubled her kill and solo block totals from her freshman season. He also worked with Mikayla Robinson, who made the SEC All-Freshman team and led all conference freshmen with 121 total blocks and her 260 kills were second-most on the team.
 
"I am eager and honored to get the opportunity to work alongside Shaun [Kupferberg] and Ciara [Jones] in continuing to help the Howard program grow,” said Welsh-White. “I feel extremely humbled and I am looking forward to growing as an assistant coach. I'm happy to be here and hope to help the team any way I can."
 
Before South Carolina, Welsh-White was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater Springfield College for their men’s program where he won a national championship. During his tenure, he compiled statistics during practice, charted the opponent’s offense during matches, outlined team and individual blocking effectiveness after the matches, and aided in improving the skills of the players.
 
For two years (2012-14), he worked as a volunteer assistant junior varsity coach at Cowan High School. Welsh-White helped coach the team to first Sectional, Regional, and State Semi-Final while guiding the squad to its first appearance and State Championship.
 
Welsh-White played three seasons at Ball State and a year with Springfield.
 
In May 2017, he received his Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in business after attending Springfield.
