2021-22: Played in 22 games … Averaged 1.4 points and 0.9 rebounds per game … Scored a season-high 10 points against Frostburg State on Jan. 15 … She also had a season-best five rebounds against Frostburg State … Recorded her only two blocked shots of the season in consecutive games against Delaware State on Feb. 12 and North Carolina Central on Feb. 26 … Handed out a season best four assists against Delaware State on Feb. 12 … Also had an assist against South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament … Notched two steals against North Carolina Central on Jan. 29 … She helped Howard win 21 games, the MEAC tournament championship, and earn its first NCAA Tournament victory in program history with a win over Incarnate Word … The MEAC tournament championship was Howard’s 11th in program history and first since 2001.
Personal
Nelson hails from Charlotte, N.C., where she guided the Mustangs to a 19-9 overall record. The 5-foot-10 wing was also a member of the S.C. 76ers in Columbia, S.C.
"Nia is a long, athletic wing, who really excels in transition," Grace commented on Nelson. "She is aggressive attacking the rim while getting downhill. Her size and length will help our defense instantly because she is so active and disruptive."
Nelson has maintained a 3.75-grade point average in the classroom while being a member of the National Honors Society.
"Her versatility will also cause match-up problems," Grace concluded. "She leads by example and is a very focused young woman. I cannot wait to see her in a Howard uniform."
