Lauren McCoy was named head coach of the Howard softball team in the summer of 2009. McCoy is no stranger to Howard; she rejoins the Bison after serving as an assistant coach in 2007.
McCoy returns to Howard after a one-year stint at Delaware State University. She helped DSU to its first ever MEAC title in 2008 and assisted with administrative duties, scouting and recruiting.
A native of Corona, Calif., McCoy was pitching coach at HU during the 2007 season and helped the Bison to a MEAC Championship and NCAA Tournament bid. She was a standout pitcher at MEAC rival Bethune-Cookman from 2003-05, helping lead the Wildcats to two conference championships in three years. During that span, MCCoy was a three-time All-MEAC First Team and MEAC All-Tournament selection.
In 2005, McCoy helped Bethune-Cookman make history by becoming the first MEAC team to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament. The Wildcats became the first MEAC Team to reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 after defeating Florida, South Florida and Central Florida in the 2005 regionals. Bethune-Cookman nearly pulled off another stunner, falling to Texas 1-0 in a nine-inning Super Regional contest. McCoy pitched a complete game for the Wildcats in that contest. She ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in earned run average during her collegiate career.
McCoy earned a Bachelor of Science from Bethune-Cookman in 2006 and a Masters in Business Administration and Finance at Delaware State in 2009. Her sister, Christina, is currently a pitcher for the Bison softball squad.
