In his second stint, Sean Whalen rejoined the Howard University Men's Basketball Coaching Staff as its assistant coach in 2015.
Since his arrival, he has seen several Bison earn all-conference honors, including Charles Williams, RJ Cole, and Howard's All-Time Leading Scorer James Daniel.
Before Howard, Whalen was a professional basketball coach with experience in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States. In his final season, Coach Whalen and GSP (Groupement Sportif des Petroliers- Algerian Super Division) Athletic Club in Algiers, Algeria finished 41-4 and was able to win both the 2014 Super Division Championship and the Algerian Cup. This was the first time in five years that a club team was able to sweep the championships.
From 2010-2013, Coach Whalen was head coach of the Algerian National Team. The team compiled a 19-4 record in friendly competition against professional teams in both Serbia and Turkey. One of the greatest accomplishments for the team and the country was a 10-5 record in official competition, which included the 2010 African Games and 2011 Arab Games. The team's fourth place finish at the 2010 African Games in Maputo, Mozambique was the best finish at the African Games in history. Coach Whalen also led Algeria to the 2012 FIBA African Championships for the first time since 2005. Through his experiences, he has built relationships with national federations, professional clubs, and agents around the world.
Before going overseas, Coach Whalen was successful at the high school level and gained NCAA experience. In four years at The Potomac School in McLean, Va, he led the team to 81 wins, including the 2008 Virginia State Championship. Following the championship win, Whalen was named 2008 Virginia State Coach of the Year, making him the youngest coach to receive the award in Virginia Independent School history.
In 2010, Coach Whalen worked as an assistant coach for Howard University during his first stint. He directed the HU basketball camp, including marketing, fundraising, and talent evaluation, scouted opponents, and analyzed film for strengths and weaknesses.
