Theron Smith
Running Backs Coach
Entering into his third season with the Bison, Theron Smith will look to build upon his success as the running back coach. Smith played a key role in the success of Bison running back Terrence
Leffall, who rushed for a career-high 1,200 yards to lead the MEAC.

Before joining Howard, Smith worked at Bowie State.  While there, Smith served as tight ends and receivers coach, beginning in 2004 and later worked under Gary Harrell who was the offensive coordinator at that time.

In 2005, Smith helped lead Bowie State to the CIAA Championship game as well as the Pioneer Bowl as the team finished 8-5 during that season.

BSU running back Nathaniel Queen, who served under Smith’s tutelage, was named the Pigskin Club Player of the Year in 2006 after leading the CIAA in rushing yards (1,212) and scoring (eight TDs). It might be noted that during Smith’s tenure at Bowie State, Isaac Redman was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent in 2009.

Smith received his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T in 1993.
