WASHINGTON (September 19, 2026) – Howard University women's volleyball team closed out the weekend with a 3-0 setback at crosstown rival George Washington (25-18, 27-25, 25-21).
HU was unable to get into a rhythm, hitting only .089 percentage as a team. Second-year Bison
Alexys James (Houston) led the Bison with a double-double (27 assists & 10 digs).
Early on, both clubs went back-and-forth in the opening set until George Washington (GW) scored six unanswered points to take a commanding 19-12 lead late in the game. HU responded with 4-0 spurt, 19-16, but GW held off the late charge to take game one, 25-18.
Howard capitalized on the Revolutionaries' miscues and took a 4-1 advantage early. GW battled back and pulled even midway through the set, thanks to a kill from Abby Markworth, 16-16.
HU answered, taking a 23-21 lead late after a pair of kills from freshman standout
Addison Buckner (Menomonee Falls, Wis.). Despite trailing, George Washington would rally to close out the set on a 6-3 run to win, 27-25, and take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Howard held a quick 3-0 lead early in game three, but GW settled to take a 10-7 advantage. HU battled back with a 5-0 spurt, highlighted by two kills from sophomore outside hitter
Corinne Howard (Derwood, Md.), 12-10.
George Washington answered with four unanswered point to regain the upper hand, 14-12, which they never relinquished. HU pulled within one on multiple occasions but were unable to get over the top.
Buckner flirted with a double-double, posting a match-leading 13 kills and nine digs. All-MEAC selection
Zenai Jethroe (Dallas) added six kills and three total blocks (team-high).
Defensively, junior libero
Camryn Shelton (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied a team-leading 14 digs in the loss.
Markworth led the Revolutionaries with a team-high 25 assists in the win.
On Sept. 24, Howard (1-10) returns home to Burr Gymnasium to host Coppin State for a Blackout Game. Bison fans are encouraged to come dressed in all black and bring the energy as HU battles the Eagles on its home court.
