Bison looking to defend home turf against VMI

WASHINGTON (September 18, 2026) – Howard University men's soccer team returns to Greene Stadium for a nonconference showdown against Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Saturday (Sept. 19). Kickoff is set for 1p.m., with the match streaming live on NEC Front Row.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
 
The upcoming contest will mark the 18th meeting between Howard and VMI with the Keydets holding an 8-7-2 advantage in the all-time series; However, the Bison have controlled the recent series, going 7-1-2 in the last 10 meetings.
 
Howard claimed the most recent matchup, defeating VMI, 1-0 (Sept. 20, 2025) in Lexington, Va. In goal, Ireal Wyze-Daly (Ontario, Canada) recorded five saves to secure the shutout while the Howard backline held VMI scoreless despite the Keydets holding a 15-12 advantage in shots.
 
HOWARD
 
Howard enters the matchup with a 1-5 record, following a 2-0 setback at UMBC (Sept. 15).
 
Through six matches, sophomore Daniil Kaban (Kharkiv, Ukraine) leads the Bison with two goals (four points) while senior Zach Simmons (Rockwall, Texas) leads the team with seven shots (six shots on goal).
 
Senior goalkeeper Liam Keiller (Gaithersburg, Md.) has started all six matches for Howard.

In his 13th season at the helm, Bison head coach Phillip Gyau continues to lead his alma mater.
 
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
 
VMI enters the matchup with a 4-4 record after falling to UNC Asheville, 4-0 (Sept. 12). The Keydets previously earned an 8-0 victory over Warren Wilson (Sept. 9).
 
Yeirin Mejia leads VMI with five goals this season while Jesse Lee and Jaden Moore have added three goals apiece.
 
Ben Bruzonic and Marshall Case have shared goalkeeping duties for the Keydets.
 
Keydet head coach Nick Regan is in his fifth season at the helm for the VMI program.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Sept. 15, Howard fell to UMBC, 2-0, in Baltimore.
 
Graduate student Calien Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y.) and freshman Xavier Sharp (Aurora, Colo.) led the Bison with two shots apiece while Keiller recorded five saves in the loss.
 
Howard also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, including five after halftime.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
Howard heads to Durham, N.C., Tuesday (Sept. 22) for a matchup against Duke University at Koskinen Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
