Softball Earns Split on Day One at the HBCU Invite

Bison tackle Alabama A&M but falls to Southern

COVINGTON, Ga. (February 13, 2026) — Howard University softball team kicked off the HBCU Collegiate Invitational with a 11-1 victory against Alabama A&M (AAMU) before falling to Southern in a 5-8 loss in the nightcap Friday (2/13) afternoon.
 
Game 1 – Howard 11, Alabama A&M 1
 
Howard leaped into the early lead when graduate student Taylor Ames-Alexander (Lancaster, S.C.) hit a two-run home run to center, 2-0.
 
The Bison continued their offensive attacks in the second inning after freshman Aniyah Whipper (Elk Grove, Calif.) doubled and Jones reached base. Ames-Alexander launched her second home run of the game – a three-run shot to center – stretching the lead, 5-0.
 
In the third, Whipper delivered a two-run homer to left, allowing junior Wisdom Colbert (Jacksonville, Fla.) to score, 7-0. Junior Merci Hart (Los Angeles) added another homer, increasing the lead, 8-0.
 
Junior Angel Riggins (San Diego) capped Howard's scoring in the fourth with a three-run blast to center, pushing Ames-Alexander and senior Kelyse Stewart (Lee's Summit, Mo.) across home plate, 11-0.
 
AAMU scored late with an RBI-single to right to make the final score in five 11-1.
 
Game 2 – Southern 8, Howard 5
 
The Bison started strong in the first with Hart and sophomore Lauryn Jones (Denton, Texas) securing back-to-back singles before Ame-Alexander delivered an RBI-double to center 1-0. Riggins added another score with an RBI-ground out to the pitcher, 2-0.
 
In the second, Colbert singled on a bunt and later stole home, 3-0, while Ames-Alexander starts the third with a homer to center, 4-0.
 
Southern followed using a pair of RBIs to cut the margin, 4-2, atop of the fourth inning.
 
Top six, SU took the lead with a four-run inning, 6-4, Riggins' RBI-single pulled HU back to within one after six, 6-5.
 
A pair of RBI-triples in the seventh extended the Jags lead, 8-5, and put the game out-of-reach.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
HU continues its road swing in the Peach State Saturday (Feb. 14) with a pair of matchups against Texas Southern and North Carolina A&T State.
