WASHINGTON (November 6, 2026) --
Zoe Stewart (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored a team-high 20 points and backcourt mate
Ariella Henigan (Chicago) tallied 18 points, including 14 points after intermission, to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to a hard-fought 76-69 win over Elon in a nonconference game at Burr Gymnasium.
It was the home season opener and the 13
th straight at home for Howard (1-1).
It was Stewart, a first team all-conference selection, who led the Bison with 13 of her points coming in the first 20 minutes.
The Phoenix (1-1) got a strong effort from Tamia Watkins (10 points) and Tyana Walker (12 points) who combined for 22 of their team's points as Elon led, 40-39, at the half. It must be noted that Walker, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, formerly played at Howard where she was named the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Rookie of the Year before transferring to Elon.
Henigan, last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year, sat for most of the first half after suffering an injury. The sophomore from Chicago came out and changed the game with her scoring during a big run that saw the Bison open their biggest lead of the game with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter.
Using its depth, Howard was able to wear down the visitors.
Destiny Bynum-Johnson (Newark, N.J.),
April Edwards (Little Rock, Ark.),
Dally Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Kearra Jones (Madison, Wis.) took turns with timely baskets. The quartet combined for 27 points and the Bison bench outscored their opponents, 22-8. The New Jersey just missed her second straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Bison forced Elon into 25 turnovers that they converted into 27 points.
La'Nae Corbert led all scorers with 21 points while Watkins added 16 points in the loss.
Howard resumes action when it travels to Huntington, W.V., to take on Marshall Tuesday (Nov. 10) at 6 p.m.
