Men’s Hoops Gears Up for MEAC Play at SC State

Bison travel to Orangeburg to battle Bulldogs

WASHINGTON (January 2, 2026) – Howard University men's basketball team travels to Orangeburg, S.C., Saturday (Jan. 3), battling South Carolina State (SC State) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Gymnasium (3,200). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

COACHES
 
Howard (9-6) is coached by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95), who is in his seventh season. SC State is coached by Erik Martin (Cincinnati, '93), who is in his third season at the helm.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
The Bulldogs have won three-in-a-row, including last year's 79-69 victory in Orangeburg. SC State leads the series, 12-10, since January 2006. Howard last won in Orangeburg, 82-78 (January 8, 2024).

On Dec. 30, sophomore forward Travelle Bryson (Anderson, S.C.) came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points and senior guard Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada) added 13 points, but a combination of foul trouble and free throw shooting proved to be too much to overcome as the Bison fell, 80-60, to Northwestern at the Welsh-Arena Arena.
 
SC STATE
 
SC State (1-14) is coming off a 105-54 loss at Tennessee in Knoxville Tuesday (Dec. 30). The Bulldogs got a game-high 25 points from Jayden Johnson on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three, along with three assists.

Graduate guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) has established himself as one of the best players in the country, currently tied for 11th nationally in free throws made and tied for 15th free throw attempts…Harris has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and has four double-doubles…In the MEAC, Harris, the frontrunner for MEAC Player of the Year, ranks second in scoring, rebounding and field goal shooting percentage, third in blocked shots and fourth in free throws made…Junior guard Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas) ranks third three pointers made per game (2.4)…Junior guard Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) is third in steals, fourth in assists, seventh in free throw shooting and ninth assists/turnover ratio…As a team, the Bison lead the MEAC in blocked shots, three pointers made per game, three-point shooting and three-point shooting defense…Nationally, Howard is tied for 42nd in turnovers forced per game…This will be a homecoming of sorts for Bryson, who hails from Anderson, S.C…Bryson, who missed games this season with injuries, has now scored in double figures the last five games in which he has played, including a career-high 19 points at Northwestern (Dec. 30).

The Bulldogs lead the conference in team offensive rebounding (12.3)…Individually in the MEAC, Johnson ranked sixth in assists, seventh in assists/turnover ratio and 10th in scoring…Cameron Clark is seventh in rebounding…Owen Bronston is fifth in three-point shooting…Tim Okojie is fifth in blocked shots.
