MATCHUP PREVIEW

SERIES HISTORY

Sunday marks the first-ever meeting between Howard and SDSU.

HOWARD

HU (0-1) returns home after a competitive season opener on the road against UNC Asheville.
Despite an early 2-0 deficit, the Bison battled back late.

Sophomore forward Daniil Kaban (Kharkiv, Ukraine) netted Howard's lone goal just seconds after subbing back in with eight minutes remaining, 2-1, assisted by junior midfielder Onarae Rice (Greenville, S.C.).

Redshirt freshman Naim Robinson (Detroit) led the Bison with two shot attempts in his collegiate debut while junior goalkeeper Ireal Wyze-Daly (Ontario, Canada) posted a pair of saves.

Howard limited UNC Asheville to just six shots in the first half and nine more after the break in a defensively gritty performance.

Bison head coach Phillip Gyau, now in his 11th season, highlighted the team's speed and athleticism as a strength this year with young talent like Robinson, Zach Simmons (Rockwall, Texas) and Yale grad transfer Justin Harris (Ypsilanti, Mich.) expected to take on bigger roles following the graduation of key scorers Mason Christian, Bryson Baker and Peter Gansallo.

SAN DIEGO STATE

The Aztecs enter the 2025 campaign looking to bounce back from a challenging 2024
season.

Opening night (Aug. 21), SDSU fell on the road at No. 17 Virginia, 2-0.

Howard's backline will be tested by SDSU's high-pressing offense and physical midfield.

LAST TIMEOUT

On Aug. 21, HU dropped a narrow 2-1 decision at UNC Asheville in its season opener. Kaban provided the late spark, but the early goals proved too much to overcome.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Next up, the Bison travel to Annapolis, Md., Friday (Aug. 29) to face Navy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., live on ESPN+.
