WASHINGTON (May 20, 2025) – Howard University Department of Athletics continues its senior spotlight series, featuring rising senior marketing major
Kasey Napper catching up with
Taylor Johnson (South Fulton, Ga.) from the women's volleyball team.
Q: What made you choose Howard University and how has your experience lived up to your expectations?
A: I chose Howard University because I could grow academically and athletically at The Mecca. Not even just with academics and athletics, but with the culture. Being surrounded by black excellence was important to me, not just to push myself to be the best version of me but to also feel at home. I could not have asked for a better experience at Howard, the friendships and family I found on the court and in the classrooms were worth everything. I have found lifelong friendships, mentors and people who truly care about me and my success. I am forever grateful to Howard for giving me memories and lessons I will cherish and carry always.
Q: What is your favorite away game or tournament you have competed in and why?
A: My favorite away tournament was the Fairfield Invitational, my sophomore year! Our third game in the tournament was on my birthday and during the time I was not keen on having to play on my birthday. I was surprised on my birthday with my hotel door decorated with amazing birthday decorations and even my room was filled with birthday surprises! I was so happy and stunned that my teammates thought of me during that time where I thought we would be mainly focused on volleyball. My parents also surprised the entire team with cupcakes, which we usually were not supposed to have during tournaments, and they sang happy birthday to me! I felt so loved and seen, I thought I would not have a good birthday, but I ended up having one of the most memorable birthdays ever. Playing volleyball with my teammates for a few hours was just a plus!
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave behind for the program?
A: I hope to leave behind a legacy of consistency, hard work and kindness. My goal coming into the program at the start was to be the best volleyball player I could be, but then I realized there is so much more that goes into being a Howard volleyball player. Showing up, laughing with teammates in the locker room before practice, bonding and so much more go into being a good teammate and not just what I can do on the court. I hope my legacy helps future athletes that come into the program know that everyone should feel seen, supported and valued!
Q: What advice would you give to a freshman joining the team?
A: It is normal to be nervous. It is okay to not be okay. Do not let one or a few mistakes define you. Make sure to use your teammates and coaches as support systems. You are never alone!
Q: What is next for you after graduation?
A: I plan on applying to veterinary medicine schools and hopefully end up becoming a veterinarian! Before that, I want to go to Universal Studios because I have been asking my parents to take me for the last four years (lol). So now, I can go!
