News & Notes from Football Spring Practice

Bison conclude with annual spring game Saturday

WASHINGTON (April 8, 2025) - One of the biggest viewing windows into Howard University football during spring practice was Saturday (April 5).

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

The Bison have their final four practices of the spring coming up — capped by Saturday's (April 12) Spring Game inside Greene Stadium — and they are looking strong both on-and-off the field.

With a focus on improving their defense, the team has been actively recruiting top talent, including standout defensive end Xavier Newsom. His commitment to the program signals a clear push to strengthen the defensive line and set the foundation for future success.

A week before the spring game, the Bison closed the second half of their latest practice participating in an American Heart Association Hands-Only CPR training to learn the correct rate and depth of CPR compressions to be confident and capable when faced with a cardiac emergency.

In addition to learning this lifesaving skill, players participated in the American Heart Association's National Walking Day (April 2). The football team will also join in the Association's promotion of CPR and AED awareness week (June 1-7).

As head coach Larry Scott enters his sixth season with the Bison, the energy around the football department is undeniable. His leadership and vision have the team ready to continue growing into a strong and competitive force in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

HOWARD PRO DAY

Meanwhile, several Bison players showcased their skills at the Howard Pro Day (March 27). Among them, Kenny Gallop Jr. (Portsmouth, Va.) — widely regarded as one of the top HBCU prospects for the 2025 NFL Draft — turned heads with his impressive vertical jump and 40-yard dash times, leaving scouts excited about his potential.

Howard defensive coordinator Kyshoen Jarrett has coached Gallop for most of his college career. The former Commanders sixth round draft pick said that Gallop's greatest intangible is himself.

"He is going to be the young man who finds the vet, who is taking care of his body, who is being the true pro and that is the pro he is going to grasp the game from," Jarrett said. "He is a sponge."

As spring practice rolls on, the Bison are putting in the work to prepare for the upcoming season. With key events like the Coaches Clinic set for Friday (April 11) and the Spring Game Saturday (April 12), the team is on track to build a stronger defense, enhance their offense and make a push for a MEAC Championship.
