Maryland Defeats Bison in Nonconference Play

Terps score early to down Softball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (April 29, 2025) – Howard University softball team fell in its nonconference showdown at Maryland (UMD), 9-2, in College Park, Md.
 
UMD (18-28) jumped on the Bison with four first-inning runs, 4-0.
 
Howard scored in the second on an unearned run, 4-1, but the Terps extended their advantage with three more runs to take a 7-1 lead after two frames.
 
Maryland added another run in the third with a RBI sac fly to left, 8-1.
 
Senior Kenna Higa (Honolulu) delivered an RBI-double to right center in the fifth, bringing home graduate Bri Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.), 8-2.
 
UMD closed out the scoring bottom six, drilling a solo homer to right center, 9-2.
 
With the setback, HU saw its program win streak (15) come to a halt.
 
Howard was held to only three hits, led by Martinez going 2-of-3 with a run scored.
 
Graduate pitcher Ameenah Ballenger (Lansdown, Pa.) threw 2.1 innings in relief while striking out three Terps.
 
For Maryland, they mustered nine runs on 11 hits at the plate. In the circle, Bri Godfrey tossed a complete-game for the Terps, going 7.0 innings with six Ks in the victory.
 
Sunday (May 4), HU wraps up the regular season with a nonconference twinbill at Longwood. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m., in Longwood, Va.
