NORFOLK, Va. (April 26, 2025) – Howard University softball team clinched its first regular season outright title with a doubleheader sweep at Norfolk State (NSU). HU defeated the Spartans in game one, 10-2 (f/5), followed by a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1 – Howard 10, Norfolk State 2 (f/5)
HU pounded out 10 runs on 14 hits with four Bison recording multiple hits.
NSU took an early 1-0 lead after one, but Howard responded with a pair of runs in the second frame, 2-1. Norfolk State answered with an RBI-double, tying the game after two innings, 2-2.
Junior
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) delivered a sac fly in foul territory to give the Bison a 3-2 edge after four.
Howard exploded for seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run blast from graduate
Bri Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.), to clinch the regular season title.
Senior
Jordin King (Pomona, Calif.) secured her fifth win of the season, tossing four innings in relief.
GAME 2 – Howard 7, Norfolk State 3
Seniors
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) and
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) led the Bison attack, each going 3-of-4 at the plate while combining for seven RBIs.
NSU (21-20, 14-6 MEAC) took the early advantage with an RBI-triple to right field, 1-0.
Top three, Higa drilled a two-run homer over the centerfield wall to give the Bison a 2-1 lead. Later that inning, Fletcher drove in rookie standout
Lauryn Jones (Denton, Texas) to extend the margin after three, 3-1.
Norfolk State tied the contest with two solo homers in the fifth, 3-3.
Fletcher and Higa delivered clutch hits to put the contest out-of-reach in the seventh, both producing two-run doubles in their final at-bat.
Graduate
Ameenah Ballenger (Lansdown, Pa.) picked up her eighth win of the year, throwing 4.1 innings with six Ks in relief.
BISON NOTES
Howard extended its win streak to a program-record 14 games, dating back to March 29.
HU won 19 conference games (program-record) in a single season.
Bison head coach
Tori Tyson and the squad won every conference series this season, first time since the 2010 campaign.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Sunday (April 27), HU (25-17, 19-1 MEAC) closes out its conference slate with a seven-inning contest against the Spartans. First-pitch is set for noon.
