WASHINGTON (March 16, 2025) – Howard University softball team completed the season series sweep versus North Carolina Central (NCCU), topping the Eagles in a high-scoring affair, 8-5, at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in D.C.
Collectively, the Bison posted eight runs on nine hits, sophomore utility player
Angel Riggins (San Diego) going a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs in the win.
NCCU (3-23, 0-3 MEAC) got on the board first with an RBI-double down the right field line, 1-0, but Howard answered in the bottom half with three scores, capped off by a two-run double from senior infielder
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.), 3-1.
North Carolina Central regained momentum with three runs in the second, 4-3, but third-year Bison
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) tied the game stealing home, 4-4.
Top three, NCCU reclaimed the upper hand with a solo homer to right center, 5-4.
Howard's bats got hot in the fourth, exploding for four runs on three hits, including Fletcher's two-run single to right center; thus, taking a 8-5 lead after four frames.
MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Preseason Pitcher of the Year
Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) closed the door from there, throwing 5.0 innings with four strikeouts while earning her fourth win of the season.
For NCCU, they manufactured five runs on nine hits with four Eagles registering multi-hit performances.
Tuesday (March 18), HU (9-13, 3-0 MEAC) meets Hofstra in a midweek nonconference showdown at Washington Nationals Youth Academy. First-pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
