WASHINGTON (March 12, 2025) – Graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points to lead five Bison in double figures as the Howard University women's basketball team cruised to an easy 85-49 win over Delaware State in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Tournament at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
The Bison (20-10), the No. 2 seed, advanced to Friday's semifinal round where they will take on the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 3 Maryland Eastern Shore and No. 6 Morgan State.
Howard jumped out to the early 21-8 lead on the strength of Howell's eight points. The Bison defense played its role, establishing itself by forcing Delaware State into turnovers and three shot clock violations.
The second quarter proved to be a time for the rest of Howell's teammates to get into the act. Howell, junior forwards
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) and
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) and newly appointed MEAC Rookie of the Year
Saniyah King (Washington) combined for 32 of their team's points en route to a commanding 41-21 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Bison defense played perhaps one of its best of the season, limiting Delaware State to 20-percent shooting 3-of-15 shooting from downtown while turning eight turnovers into 14 of their 25 points during a 25-7 blitz.
For the game, the Bison shot 7-of-15 from beyond the arc while dominating the paint (28-12) and the boards (48-25).
Thomas, King and graduate forward
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) each contributed 11 points and Miller chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
The Hornets, the No. 7 seed, led her team with a game-high 24 points and Mahogany Cottingham tallied 10 points in a losing effort.
