BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (February 8, 2025) – Howard University softball team wrapped up the weekend with a split at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic, hosted by Garder-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
HU dropped a close matchup against West Georgia in game one, 7-6, but rebounded with a 4-1 victory over Drexel in the nightcap.
GAME 2 (Howard 4, Drexel 1)
In game two, grad transfer
Ameenah Ballenger (Lansdown, Pa.) secured her second win of the season, tossing a complete game while allowing only five hits in the victory.
Ballenger helped her own cause with an RBI-single up-the-middle, bringing home
Bri Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.), 1-0.
Top two, senior
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) drilled a shot over the left field fence while giving HU a 2-0 advantage after two innings of play.
Martinez drove in a run top four with a sac fly to left field, 3-0.
Ballenger kept the pressure on, delivering an RBI-double and giving the Bison a 4-0 lead.
Drexel ended its scoring drought with a solo home run to left center, 4-1.
Freshman
Lauryn Jones (Denton, Texas) went 2-of-3 with a walk in the win.
GAME 1 (Howard 6, West Georgia 7)
HU pounded out six runs on 11 hits with four Bison collecting two hits apiece.
Howard trailed, 3-0, after two innings, but fought back in the third with a pair of runs, 3-2.
Bottom four, West Georgia extended its lead with three more runs, 6-2.
HU battled back, scoring a combine three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, 6-5.
West Georgia added an insurance run in the sixth, but the Bison refused to go away.
Top seven, Howard sliced the margin back to one, 7-6, with an RBI-single from Jones. But the comeback would fall short.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On Feb. 14-16, Howard goes to Atlanta for the HBCU Invitational where they will face five opponents from the Southwest Athletic Conference.
