WASHINGTON (February 3, 2025) – Junior forward
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) recorded a double-double (19 points & 10 rebounds) and graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) added 13 points to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to a 68-41 win over South Carolina State (SC State) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) at Burr Gymnasium.
Howard (11-9, 4-1 MEAC) started slowly but finally got going as Thomas scored eight of her team's points as the Bison held a 20-12 first quarter lead.
The Bulldogs (2-21, 1-6 MEAC) were not able to get anything going as they turned the ball over and had problems keeping up with the Bison fast paced game.
Howard began to utilize its bench and got scoring from a number of Bison as they opened a double-digit advantage at the half, 38-20.
The Howard defense and its depth began to wear on the visitors as SC State missed 11-of-its-14 shots in the second quarter, allowing the Bison to maintain their comfortable bulge.
Thomas continued to work in the third quarter with help from Howell, freshman guard
Saniyah King (Washington) and senior forward
Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.).
Ten different Bison scored for Howard while SC State, which has been plagued all season by turnovers, committed 25 miscues that the Bison converted into 25 points.
Blake just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. King, who ranks among the nation's leaders in assists, finished with nine points, three dimes and four steals.
SC State was led by Angie Juste-Jean, who recorded a double-double (11 points & 11 rebounds) in a losing cause.
NEXT UP: Howard hosts North Carolina Central Saturday (Feb. 8) at 2 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
