Bison seeking to end skid against Bulldogs

WASHINGTON (February 2, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team takes on South Carolina State (SC State) Monday (Feb. 3) inside Burr Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

On Feb. 1, freshman standout Blake Harper (Washington) scored 29 of his career-high 35 points in the second half and overtime, but a rare four-point play by the Pirates gave Hampton a thrilling, 80-79, win over the Bison at the Sports & Entertainment Arena in Southeast D.C.
 
SC STATE
 
South Carolina State (9-12, 3-3 MEAC) is coming off a 67-65 overtime road loss at Norfolk State Saturday (Feb. 1). Taylor Mitchell led the Bulldogs with 15 points, Drayton Jones (14 points) and Everett Davion (13 points) off the bench.
 
THE COACHES
 
SC State is coached by Erik Martin (Cincinnati, '93), who is in his third year. Howard is led by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95), who is in his sixth season and has led the Bison to two straight MEAC Tournament titles and NCAA appearances.

The Bulldogs' last three losses were by a combined total of eight points…SC State has played 12 different starting lineups on the season.
 
BISON NOTES
 
Harper has established himself as one of the top freshmen in the country, being named MEAC Rookie of the Week 12 times this season...A rarity in the conference, Harper holds the honor of having been named the MEAC Player of the Week, along with his growing list of accolades…Harper also holds the distinction of being rank fourth among all freshmen in scoring behind Ace Bailey and Bryce Harper of Rutgers and Cooper Flagg of Duke…Harper has recorded three double-doubles while scoring 30 or more points three times, including Saturday's (Feb. 1) career-high 35 points versus Hampton…Harper has reached double figures in all but two games...Dockery is quietly having his best all-around season in a Bison uniform, continuing to be the premier long ball shooter in the conference for the third straight season…Dockery has flourished in other areas: shooting a career-best 46-percent from the field; 43-percent from downtown and 84-percent from the charity stripe…Dockery has improved his playmaking skills as he is scheduled to set a new career high in assists...Dockery ranks No. 39 in the country in three-point field shooting percentage...Dockery has also reached double figures in all but two games and the same for hitting at least on three pointer in all but two contests...Shockley-Okeke had his seven-game streak of reaching double figures broken versus Hampton (Feb. 1), scoring only six points, along with his streak of at least one three pointer made in 14 straight games broken…Graduate guard Jaren Johnson (Lynwood, Calif.) has stepped up in the past three games, totaling 30 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists…The Bison are averaging almost 18 assists per game and limiting opponents to 31-percent shooting from the three-point line…A nemesis for the Bison has been turnovers where they are surrendering 18 points a contest off their miscues…Howard has now played with 12 different starting lineups, the most in the past 10 years…Dockery, who is a member of the 1,000-point club at Howard, currently ranks third on the school all-time list for three pointers made in a career, 21 behind Charles "CJ" Williams and Ron Williamson.
