WASHINGTON (February 3, 2025) – Senior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) and graduate forward
Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) each scored 18 points and freshman standout
Blake Harper (Washington) added 17 points but it was not enough to offset a season-high 29 turnovers as the Howard University men's basketball team fell, 89-66, to South Carolina State (SC State) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (8-14, 3-2 MEAC) got off to a good start and led by as many as 11 points and settled for a 40-32 advantage at the half.
Dockery paced Howard with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Harper, who was just named the MEAC Player of the Week for the second time this season, got seven-of-his-nine from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs (10-12, 4-3 MEAC) got 14 points from Omar Croskey, including a key three-pointer at the end of the half.
Then, SC State began to chip away at the lead to start the second and reeled off a 9-0 run that took its first lead of the game, 41-40. Howard responded and took a 56-54 lead at the 12:07 mark.
Then, the Bulldogs all pout the game away with a 20-4 run that featured baskets off Howard's turnovers. During that period, the Bison were held to no field goals for almost eight minutes.
For the game, the Bison turned the ball over 29 times and allowed the Bulldogs to convert them into 34 points. SC State won the points in the paint battle, 44-16, and the bench production, 25-11.
Harper, who was in foul trouble before fouling out, added six rebounds and four assists.
The Bulldogs were led by Croskey, who tallied a career-high 27 points, Draylon Jones (15 points) and Jayden Johnson (14 points).
NEXT UP: Howard looks to end its current slide when it hosts North Carolina Central Saturday (Feb. 8) at 4 p.m., inside The Burr.
