Howell, King Lead Women’s Hoops to Road Win at Coppin State

Bison push win streak to seven

BALTIMORE (February 24, 2025) – Graduate guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) and freshman standout Saniyah King (Washington) each scored 17 points to lead four Bison in double figures as the Howard University women's basketball team pulled away in a 70-60 win at Coppin State (CSU).

The win was the seventh straight for the streaking Bison, who upped their mark to 17-9 (10-1 MEAC). The Eagles fell to 16-11 (7-4 MEAC).

The two teams battled through three quarters. Coppin State managed a 19-14 advantage after one quarter on the scoring of Angel Jones. Through the next two quarters, the score went back and forth, but the Eagles refused to relinquish the lead. CSU took a 49-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

Then, Howell and King helped fuel a 10-0 run over the first 4:23 of the period to open a double-digit lead. The duo was especially effective with their long-range shooting, connecting on 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Junior forwards Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) and Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) got into the act as the Eagles had no answer for the Bison's spurt. Miller contributed 10 points and six rebounds while Thomas tallied 10 points in the win.

In addition to her 17 points, Howell added a season-high seven rebounds.

King, who has led the team in scoring the past two games (averaging 24.0 points) was held without an assist for the first time this season in the game against Morgan State (Feb. 22). But the shoo-in for MEAC Rookie of the Year, collected five dimes.

The Bison defense continues to play well during this current streak. They held the hosts to 37-percent shooting from the field while collecting 21 points courtesy of 14 Coppin State turnovers.

The Eagles were led by Jones with 15 points, reserve Mickelle Lowry with 14 points off the bench and Laila Lawrence with a double-double (12 points & 12 rebounds).

NEXT UP: Coppin State takes on Delaware State in Dover, Del., Saturday (March 1) at 2 p.m. Howard looks to continue its streak when it travels to Durham, N.C. to take on the Eagles of North Carolina Central Saturday (March 1) at 2 p.m.
