BALTIMORE (February 24, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team suffered a 72-61 road loss at Coppin State (CSU) inside PEC Arena in Baltimore.
With the setback, HU dropped to 12-16 overall (7-4 MEAC) while the Eagles improved to 5-21 (3-8 MEAC).
Freshman standout
Blake Harper (Washington), reigning MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player and Rookie of the Week, led the way with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe.
Graduate
Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) scored the first bucket of the contest and gave HU a quick 3-0 advantage. But CSU responded and took the lead less than two minutes into the game and never relinquished.
Both squads went back-and-forth throughout the first half with Coppin State holding a slim lead, 18-16, at the 3:54 mark. From that point, CSU closed the period on a 13-3 run to take a double-digit advantage at the break, 31-19.
After intermission, Coppin State kept the pressure on and ballooned the margin to 15 points, 38-23, with less than 17 remaining.
HU battled back, trimming the deficit back to single digits after Harper's jumper at the 10:39 mark, 43-36.
CSU answered with another run of their own to close the game, increasing the lead back to double digits, including a 16-point margin with only 2:51 left.
Senior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) tallied 12 points in the loss.
Overall, the Bison shot under 34-percent (19-of-56), including 28-percent (7-of-25) from beyond the arc, while committing 20 turnovers.
For CSU, Toby Nnadozie led all scorers with 25 points while Derrius Ward added 17 points in his second game back for the Eagles.
Howard continues its current MEAC road swing at Durham, N.C., against the Eagles of North Carolina Central (NCCU) Saturday (March 1) at 4 p.m.
