DOVER, Del. (February 15, 2025) – Graduate forward
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to a 62-45 win over Delaware State (DSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Memorial Hall.
The win was the fourth straight for the streaking Bison while the Hornets are still looking for their first conference win.
Creek came into the game struggling, averaging only 5.5 points per game. But the preseason All-MEAC selection came out firing, connecting on her first three shots, all from beyond the arc to lead her team to a 17-12 first-quarter advantage. Creek's previous high (23) was against George Washington (Dec. 13, 2021).
With Creek having set the tone, her teammates got into the act, helping the Bison reel off a 15-6 second quarter run that extended the lead to 32-18 at intermission.
Team-leading scorer graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) finished with six points, almost 10 points below her average; however, contributed six rebounds and three steals.
The Bison played without the services of junior forward
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland), the team's third-leading scorer (10.6 ppg) and leading rebounder (6.8 rpg). But it did not matter as senior forwards
Marissa Steel (Laurel, Md.) and
Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.) came off the bench to combine for 12 points and 17 rebounds between them.
Twelve players saw action and 10 Bison scored in the win.
Howard had one of its more impressive outings, holding a 49-35 advantage on the boards while limiting the Hornets to 25-percent shooting (12-of-47) from the field, including only 2-of-13 from downtown.
Offensively, Howard did not shoot the ball well (22-of-66 for 33-percent). But with Creek's hot hand and her teammates combining to shoot a season-high 55-percent (11-of-20) from three-point land, the Bison were able to secure yet another important conference win and stay a game behind conference leader, Norfolk State, which handed the Bison their only conference loss.
Freshman guard
Saniyah King (Washington) had yet another solid all-around game, scoring 11 points, dealing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds.
Delaware State (4-18, 0-8 MEAC) was led by Keirra Mcelrath with a team-high 18 points and six rebounds and Mahogany Cottingham with 15 points.
NEXT UP: Delaware State will be looking to get its first conference win when it travels to Norfolk, Va., to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State Monday (Feb. 17) at 5:30 p.m. Howard will entertain Maryland Eastern Shore Monday (Feb. 17) at 5:30 p.m., inside The Burr.
