Men’s Hoops Battles Bowie State Saturday Night

Bison face Bulldogs in a DMV clash

WASHINGTON (December 5, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team returns to Burr Gymnasium Saturday (Dec. 6), facing DMV rival Bowie State in a nonconference clash. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

COACHES
 
Bowie State is coached by Darrell Brooks (Bowie State, 7'9), who is in his 16th season at the helm. Howard is led by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95), who is in his seventh season.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
Bowie State defeated the Bison, 76-73, last year inside The Burr in the first and only meeting between the two institutions. Warren Mougada nailed a three pointer with two seconds to win the game for the Bulldogs.

Bowie State trailed, 50-36, against Shippensburg State at halftime and rallied but fell short in an 88-79 home loss Wednesday (Dec. 3).
 
The Bulldogs got a game-high 29 from Jaiden McGhee and 21 points from KJ West. The duo combined to connect of 19-of-31 from the field, but the remainder of the team combined for 11-of-33.
 
HOWARD
 
On Nov. 29, HU placed five Bison in double figures and rebounded from a double-digit deficit but came up just short, 79-75, at Mount St. Mary's in a nonconference battle inside Knott Arena.
 
Guard Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas) led Howard with 15 points, but the junior sharpshooter had his worst shooting performance on the season, connecting on only 5-of-15, including 3-of-11 from his specialty area.

BOWIE STATE
 
The Bulldogs have five players who average double figures in scoring: McGhee (18.0); Morrisey (16.2); West (13.2); Fauntleroy (12.4) and Thomas, III (10.9)…Bowie State is being outrebounded per game (-7.0)…The Bulldogs are averaging 17 points off opponent turnovers and recording 5.0 blocked shots per game…Bowie State third in blocked shots, fourth in three pointers made per game, fifth in three-point shooting defense, sixth in three-point shooting defense and steals…McGhee is fifth in the conference in scoring and eighth in field goal shooting…Fauntleroy is eighth in three-point shooting and Melvin is seventh in blocked shots.

Graduate guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) was named MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player of the Week for the second time this season, establish himself as one of the best players in the country…Nationally, he currently ranks fourth in points, 11th in points per game, tied for 11th in field goals, tied for 13th in free throws made and tied for 22nd in free throw attempts...In the MEAC, Harris, the frontrunner for MEAC Player of the Year, leads the conference in scoring and rebounding…Cotton ranks second in the league at three-point shooting percentage and three pointers made per game…Junior guard Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) is third in the conference in assists…Freshman guard Jeremiah Johnson (Potomac, Md.) is second in the MEAC in steals…Howard is averaging 7.3 three-point field goals made per game and shooting almost 40-percent from beyond the arc…The Bison are doing it with their sharing of the ball (17 assists per game) and the takeaways (9.1 steals & 18 points off opponents' turnovers)…Okojie has been a pleasant surprise after missing much of the past two seasons with various medical issues, the senior guard/forward is having his best scoring season in a Bison uniform…Sophomore forward Travelle Bryson (Anderson, S.C.) continues to provide a spark off the bench.

Bowie State travels to California, Pa., to take on California (Pa.) Monday (Dec. 8) at 7 p.m.  Howard takes on an old rival in North Carolina A&T State Tuesday at 7 p.m., in Durham, N.C., at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
