WASHINGTON (November 9, 2025)— Graduate guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points to lead four Bison in double figures, but Grambling State (GSU) made just enough plays to edge the Howard University men's basketball team, 73-70, in a nonconference HBCU showdown inside Burr Gymnasium.
A 6-foot-4 guard, Harris added six rebounds and a career-high five assists to his stat line.
He got plenty of help from fellow guards
Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas),
Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) and
Travelle Bryson (Anderson, S.C.), combining for 35 points.
It was one of the more entertaining and competitive games that you will see this time of the early season. The two HBCUs, who were playing each other for the first time, went back-and-forth with neither able to get an edge.
There 12 ties and seven lead changes, five coming in the second half.
The Tigers from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) shot 50-percent from the floor (25-of-49), including a sizzling 50-percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc.
Jimal Lane and Jamil Muttilib did most of the damage for the visitors, combining for 24 of their team's 41 second half points.
The two teams traded baskets with neither backing down.
Grambling (1-1) got somewhat of a push with a mini run midway through the second half that helped build the game's biggest lead, 61-53, with under nine minutes on the clock.
But Gillus and Cotton came up with big shots and free throws to reduce the deficit to single digits, 71-70, with a minute remaining.
But Lane closed the door with two clutch free throws with 16 second remaining.
The Bison had a chance to tie the game, but a Cotton three-point attempt came up short.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor, but Howard surrendered 19 points off their 19 turnovers.
GSU bench outscored the hosts, 25-16, but it must be noted that the Bison played without the services of one of the team's top scorers in junior forward
Cedric Taylor III (Atlanta), who is out with a hand injury and has yet to play this season.
Muttilib led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Lane (18 points), Derrius Ward (12 points) and Antonio Munoz (11 points), respectively.
NEXT UP: Howard hosts Alcorn State, another SWAC and HBCU opponent, Thursday (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m., inside The Burr.
