Howard Falls in Regular Season Finale at FDU

Bison secure No. 3 seed heading into NEC Tournament

TEANECK, NJ. — Howard women's soccer closed out the regular season Sunday afternoon with a 2–0 loss to FDU at University Stadium. With the result, the Bison finish the regular season 9–6–3 overall and 7–2–2 in conference play, earning the No. 3 seed heading into this week's NEC Tournament. The top-seeded Knights improved to 9–5–5 (9–0–2 NEC) with the win.

The hosts took an early lead in the 13th minute after a cross into the box found the back of the net to make it 1–0. Howard began to create chances of its own, highlighted by a 42nd-minute strike from senior Jaileen De Freitas (Miramar, Fla.) that forced a save from the knight in goal. The Bison defense, anchored by Rachel Suttle (Smyrna, Ga.) and Bre'Elle Dean (North Ogden, Utah), kept the Knights in place the remainder of the half to enter the break trailing by one.

In the second half, Howard continued to push forward, earning three corner kicks and two shots on goal, including a 69th-minute effort from Asia Mickens-Perez (Upper Marlboro, Md.) that tested the new FDU goalkeeper. Despite the Bison pressure, the Knights added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute to make it 2–0. Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) fired wide in the 83rd minute on Howard's final opportunity before the match ended.

Mickens-Perez and De Freitas each recorded a shot on goal, while Trinity Knox (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied three saves in 80 minutes of action. Freshman goalkeeper Sienna Hamilton-Grein (Upper Marlboro, Md.) entered in the final nine minutes, preserving a scoreless stretch to close the match.

As a team, Howard was outshot 12–3 but placed two attempts on target and drew three corner kicks. The Bison committed just seven fouls compared to 14 by FDU and limited the Knights to one second-half corner opportunity.

The Bison now turn their focus to the postseason, returning to action Thursday, November 6, when they face Wagner in the NEC Semifinals on the road in Staten Island, N.Y. (time TBD).
