FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 11, 2025) - For the second game in a row, Howard University jumped out to the lead, but again, a second half comeback proved to be the difference as Sacred Heart University (SHU) pulled out a 32-14 win over the Bison in a nonconference game at Campus Field.
Â
Using their nationally ranked defense to dictate the game early, the Bison forced a fumble that was returned 10 yards by
Judah McJimpsey (Spartanburg, S.C.). It took the Bison two plays to capitalize as sophomore running back
Anthony Reagan Jr. (Camden, N.J.) found a seam in the right side of the Pioneers' defense and raced untouched for a 35-yard TD just at the end of the first quarter.Â
Â
Both teams exchanged possession without either scoring until the Bison went 57 yards in eight plays with graduate quarterback
Tyriq Starks (Carol City, Fla.) twisting his way 14 yards to make the score, 14-0, with 2:05 on the clock in the second quarter.
Â
Then, things changed quickly.
Â
SHU (5-2) finally got on the board when Matt Kling nailed a 49-yard field that cut the deficit, 14-3, at the half.
Â
The Bison (3-3) were unable to get anything going on offense in the third period while SHU found its rhythm.
Â
Freshman running back Mitchell Summers, who rushed for a career-high 243 yards, hit his stride and raced 80 yards to get his team to within one possession, 14-10, early in the third quarter.
Â
The Pioneers would go on to add another Klinger field goal, this time from 19 yards, following a strong goal line stand by the Howard defense to cut the deficit to one, 14-13, with 6:20 on the clock in the third stanza.
Â
The Howard continued to struggle and the Pioneers capitalized.
Â
Again, the Buffalo Soldier defense stood tall and forced a Kling 25-yard field goal to finally take the lead, 16-14, with just 54 seconds left in the third quarter.
Â
The Pioneers essentially sealed the game when Jack Snyder found Payton Rhoades on a 15-yard hookup and Summer adding his second TD, this time from 49 yards.
Â
Reagan had yet another outstanding game with 116 yards and another 39 on four receptions.
Â
McJimpsey led the way on defense with seven tackles and a tackle for a loss.
Â
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the Tigers of Tennessee State Saturday (Oct. 18). Kickoff at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
