WASHINGTON (August 5, 2024) - The Howard University football team wrapped up its first week of fall camp under head coach
Larry Scott with shorts and helmets at Greene Stadium. The team is ready to tackle these next few weeks with determination, brotherhood and scholarship on the front lines.
Â
The Bison will have 20 workouts before the team's season opener Thursday (Aug. 29) at Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. Howard is coming off back-to-back MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Championships.
Â
"We must learn to make a covenant with each other and commit to putting in the necessary work for the team to succeed," Scott said. "We are learning what it truly means to operate as a championship program. Our focus must extend beyond the field to include excellence in the classroom and within the community."
Â
Scott expressed pride in the exemplary leadership shown by the returning players, who are actively mentoring and integrating new team members with great enthusiasm. He commended both veteran and new players for their positive effort and camaraderie during the toughest week of camp, emphasizing their 'I am my brother's keeper' mentality. He is also seeing impressive growth and talent from the new recruits while concentrating on developing the bottom third of the roster.
Â
"There is going to be an acclimation period where we are going to have to condition our football team," Scott stated. "But I was pleased with the competitiveness and the focus of the group in terms of how they went through each and every drill."
Â
Scott extended a special shout out to the Bison student workers, acknowledging their dedication to give up a part of their summer to contribute to the team in their unique roles.
Â
"We would not be where we are without the hard work of everyone involved, from managers and trainers to equipment staff and recruiting professionals who are the backbone of our team's success," Scott added.
Â
Howard continues practice again this week before using Thursday (Aug. 8) and Sunday (Aug. 11) as recovery days. The Bison's first day in full pads was Sunday (Aug. 4) and their first scrimmage is Wednesday (Aug. 7).
