NORMAN, Okla. (August 19, 2024) – The Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) uncovered its third annual BCGCA Awards where Howard University saw four Bison receive recognition for their incredible performances during the 2023-24 season. The announcement came Monday morning.
Howard Director of Golf
Sam Puryear and Bison standout
Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) highlighted the list, taking home HBCU Coach of the Year and HBCU Golfer of the Year, respectively.
Puryear guided the club to its first NEC (Northeast Conference) Championship. In addition to leading the Bison to their first NEC Title and a berth in NCAA Regionals, he etched his name in the conference record book as Howard's first NEC Coach of the Year honoree.
For Odom, he was selected to the All-NEC First Team after averaging a 72.0 per round.
The Memphis native also made the BCGCA All-America Team, alongside fellow All-NEC First Team honoree and teammate
Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.). Last season, the Bison duo shared the individual crown at the Princeton Invitational (April 6-7).
Kezaia Dimosi (London, England) earned a spot on the BCGCA All-Freshmen Team after competing in six events a year ago. The England product averaged 77.1 per round.
The awards honor black college golfers from all backgrounds and across all divisions of college golf.
On Sept. 9-10, Howard and the University of San Francisco (USF) host the HU/USF Intercollegiate at Manor Country Club in Rockville, Md.
