WASHINGTON (August 15, 2024) – Howard University women's soccer kicked the season off on a high note, downing the Saint Peter's (SPU) Peacocks, 4-2, in Thursday night's opener at Greene Stadium.
With help from teammates
Gabrielle Garcia-Terrell (Centreville, Va.) and
Zoe Moore (Lutz, Fla.), sophomore
Mimi Richards (Silver Spring, Md.) opened the scoring by notching her second career goal in the lower left corner of the net, 1-0.
An own goal by the Peacocks pushed the Bison away to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but SPU joined the scoreboard seven minutes later, sneaking a shot into the lower right corner, 2-1.
After the half, Richards started the scoring once again when she capitalized on a PK (penalty kick) to extend the margin, 3-1. Team captain
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) posted Howard's final goal of the night just three minutes later, 4-1.
Fighting their way back, SPU managed to connect another shot on goal in the 80
th minute for a 4-2 final.
Newcomer
Hailey Ayers (Lorton, Va.) found her footing in goal, registering three saves in the second half while facing six shots.
The Bison return to action Sunday, August 18 at 3 p.m., as they travel to Norfolk, Va., and face the Hampton Lady Pirates.
