WASHINGTON (August 14, 2024) – Howard University women's soccer team opens its 2024 campaign Thursday night (Aug. 15), hosting Saint Peter's (SPU) in nonconference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., inside Greene Stadium.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Last season, the Bison had one of the more remarkable turnarounds in recent history.

After a 3-11-2 (2-6-1 NEC) campaign in 2022 that was plagued by the injury bug, Howard rebounded to finish 12-6-2 (6-3-1 NEC) while reaching the conference tournament semifinal round. Despite a gallant effort, HU came up just short, 2-1, in a heartbreaker to Northeast Conference (NEC) perennial Central Connecticut State.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

HOWARD

HU comes into the 2024 season looking to challenge for the Northeast Conference (NEC) title.

The squad features a nice combination of seasoned veterans and youth, led by All-NEC First Team selection senior forward Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.), sophomore midfielder Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) and reigning NEC Goalie of the Year sophomore Trinity Knox (Atlanta).

The Bison have been picked to finish third in the preseason, led by longtime head coach Brent Leiba, who is entering his 15th year.

SAINT PETER'S

SPU is coming off a tough season, going 4-11 overall (2-8 MAAC).

Despite losing their top scorer from a year ago, Alyssa Hackett, Saint Peter's is poised for a bounce back season, led by Joana Dias and Gianna Grassifulli. A year ago, both Peacocks tallied nine points apiece.

Coming into the season, SPU was projected to finish 12th in the MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Julia Brazi enters her fourth season at the helm.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Sunday (Aug. 18), Howard travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Hampton in the Battle of the Real HU. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
