WASHINGTON (July 25, 2024) -
Frederick Ray was a health science major and dual-sport athlete from the Sunshine State, competing on the Howard University football team (1994-99) and wrestling team (1995).
In May 1999, Ray graduated from The Mecca with a bachelor's degree in science. He continued his educational journey at Jones International University, obtaining his master's degree in educational leadership (June 2013). In February 2019, the Florida native completed his schooling at Capella University, achieving his doctorate in education, curriculum and instruction.
Post-graduation, Ray took on the position of Orange County Public Schools administrative dean where he processed discipline referrals with an emphasis on intervention and a proactive approach to improving student behavior. Ray implemented intervention strategies to minimize classroom disruptions while simultaneously maximizing student engagement, coordinated the ISS (In-School Suspension) program to maximize academic success and developed an ABS (Alternative Behavior Strategies) program to reduce suspension and increase instructional time.
Ray worked his way into the Orange County Public Schools assistant principal role. Through his work and dedication, Ray received 2019-20 Assistant Principal of the Year.
He overtook the responsibility for the entire school's daily discipline, sparking a 60-percent decrease in significant infractions and referrals through restorative justice and interventions. He greatly impacted the school system by creating a turnaround that moved the school's letter grade from an "F" to an "C" in his five years as assistant principal. In this role, Ray oversaw curriculum, crafted feedback for improvement through a critical turnaround lens and guided teachers in planning and executing standards-based instruction.
Currently, Ray is the principal of Orange County Public Schools where he oversees daily activities and operations within the school while disciplining and advising students, approving teachers' curricula and ensuring a safe school environment for all students and staff. During his time as principal, Ray has overseen an 80-point increase in ELA, math, acceleration proficiency, and learning gains and increased the school's grade by nine-percent.
Ray has thrived in improving school culture through teacher and student celebration while providing students with a bias-free atmosphere to maximize their potential. His efforts, passion and commitment to the improvement of the education system in the state of Florida has solidified him as a district model for all schools.
