WASHINGTON (June 5, 2024) – Six Howard University student-athletes earned Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards for their academic success and extracurricular activities during the 2023-24 campaign.
Those named 2024 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars maintained a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, at least sophomores academically and have been active on their campuses or communities.
Howard student-athlete honorees include
Nyla Allen (Elmont, N.Y.),
Marli Berry (Orangevale, Calif.),
Terrance Hollon (Cleveland),
Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.),
Cameren Sullivan (Chicago) and
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.).
Last season, Allen and Berry led the women's soccer team to its first Northeast Conference (NEC) Semifinal appearance in program history.
Later that year, Hollon guided the football team to back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships while earning its first-ever berth to the Cricket Celebration Bowl.
In the winter, Nwaeze was named NEC Women's Co-Outstanding Swimmer after leading the swimming & diving squad to a runner-up finish at the conference championships.
Sullivan was selected to the MEAC All-Tournament after propelling the women's bowling team to a third-place finish.
Walker became the fifth Bison in program history to win the illustrious MEAC Rookie of the Year award, leading the women's basketball squad to its fourth straight league title game appearance.
The Diverse: Issues In Higher Education publication sponsors the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate minority student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education and his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars.
