Senior Spotlight Featuring Kaniyah Harris

A sit down with MEAC Champion Kaniyah Harris

WASHINGTON (June 11, 2024) – Howard University Department of Athletics rolls on with another senior spotlight episode, featuring recent journalism grad Badi Cross sitting down with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, Md.) from the women's basketball team, who talked about her career, life at Howard and everything basketball.

Q: What is your fondest memory at Howard?
A: My fondest memory was this year's HU Homecoming and Springfest when we had the City Girls perform.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you received at Howard?
A: Your Howard degree will take you further than you could ever expect. Embrace the networking opportunities and resources you have at Howard because everyone does not have these opportunities, especially at an HBCU.

Q: What made basketball your favorite sport growing up?
A: It actually was not my favorite sport (lol) but my parents made me play and I am glad they did because I am able to start my adulthood with no debt and a degree that pays well.

Q: What was your most memorable game?
A: My most memorable game was winning a MEAC Championship because all the hard work paid off. It was a great experience and I will cherish forever.

Q: What advice do you have for future Bison?
A: My advice for future Bison is to remember your end goal and do not let anything keep you from reaching it!

Q: How did you handle stepping into the role of being a leader as a senior this year?
A: Well, I have been a captain since my sophomore year, so it was really no difference. I just continued to be vocal, firm in my stance and decisive in the best interest of our team.

Q: How would your teammates describe you in one word and why?
A: Reliable because they knew I would always be there to help them the best way I could, both on and off the court.

Q: Do you have any rituals pregame, post-game or in the locker room?
A: Pregame: Lip gloss and swooped edges before every game and if I ever felt the slightest doubt in my capabilities, I would knock on wood.

Q: What (or who) will you miss the most at Howard?
A: I will miss the packed gyms when we played tough teams and my teammates. I will not miss the parking tickets though (lol).

Q: What are your post-grad plans?
A: I am going to be a software engineer and as I progress throughout my career, I want to take on cybersecurity as well.
