NORFOLK, Va. (May 9, 2024) – No. 2 Howard University softball ends its stellar season in Game Six of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament with a 6-3 loss to No. 5 South Carolina State (SCSU).
SCSU put up an early 1-0 lead with a double to right field.
After two scoreless innings in the second and third, the Bison equalized the playing field in the fourth when standout Bison
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) sent one out of the park – her second home run of the season. The Bison followed up with a sac fly to center field, giving
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) time to run home with a 2-1 lead.
The two heavyweights battled it out through two more innings before the Bulldogs inched back to level the board in the seventh. With no outs, South Carolina State hit to second base but a fielding error at first gave the Bulldogs the opportunity to cross home plate. With bases loaded, a hit by pitch gave SCSU the lead, 3-2. The Bulldogs continued to utilize handed plays, pulling out to a 6-2 lead.
The Bison did not go down easy. A double to center field setup
Merci Hart (Los Angeles) on second base. Team MVP
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) followed with a shot up the middle while advancing to second on a throwing error and forcing Hart home.
The Bison conclude their historic season with a 32-13 record – a program win record, eight All-Conference players, three broken program records and two top-10 nationally ranked players.
