Senior Spotlight: The Grad Edition…Featuring Talin Lewis

Catching up with MEAC Champion Talin Lewis

WASHINGTON (May 29, 2024) – Howard University Department of Athletics rolls on with Senior Spotlight grad edition, featuring Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion Talin Lewis (Westlake Village, Calif.) from the men's basketball team, who was interviewed by rising senior journalism major Sareyah Rudd.

Q: When did your interest in basketball initially begin?
A: I have been playing basketball for as long as I can remember. My love for the game definitely grew from always playing with my dad and as I continued to grow as a player, I fell more and more in love with the sport.

Q: What do you like most about basketball?
A: The thing I enjoy most about basketball is being around my teammates and sharing moments with them on and off the court.

As for the game, I would say unpredictability because you never know what is going to happen next, which makes basketball the most interesting sport in the world.

Q: What kept you motivated?
A: Winning kept me motivated, along with my teammates because being surrounded by a bunch of guys with the same goals left no room for quitting. We were all willing to do whatever it took to win and the last two years showed that.

Q: How has playing basketball impacted your life?
A: Basketball has changed me in ways that I could never imagine because I have been able to travel all over the country and meet people from all over the world. It allowed me to meet some of my closest friends and learned lessons that I will take with me forever.

Q: Using one word, how do you think your teammates would have described you?
A: I think my teammates would describe me as driven.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
A: Paul George (NBA Superstar) is my favorite athlete because I enjoy his pace of play and the fluidity he moves with for being a bigger guy. There are a few things he cannot do and his ability excel, both defensively and offensively, make him a special player.

Q: What other sport would you play if not basketball?
A: If I was not playing basketball, I would have competed in track and field.

Q: How did you manage your time between training, school and extracurricular activities?
A: I managed my time by being proactive and understanding the tasks at hand. As a student-athlete, you always have a lot on your plate so time management is important.

Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I will miss all the people I have met at Howard. Coming into this, I did not know what to expect but what I have experienced transcends anything I could have expected.

Q: Any last words or advice you would like to give to future Bison?
A: My advice is getting out of your comfort zone and fully embrace the Howard experience because you never know who you are going to meet. So, be open to all opportunities Howard has to offer.
