DOVER, Del. (April 6, 2024) – Howard University softball tied its program record with a season sweep at Delaware State (DSU), extending the win streak to 11, which was set earlier this season.
With the victory, HU improved to 27-7 (11-1 MEAC) while earning its third consecutive series sweep in league play.
Howard racked up four runs on 10 hits, led by junior
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) and sophomore
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) with three hits apiece.
Third-year Bison
Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) got HU on the board first, thanks to a two-run single to center that drove home Higa and Jordan, 2-0.
Jordan extended the lead with an RBI-single next inning, 3-0, but the Lady Hornets responded with a run of their own to cut the deficit after two innings of play, 3-1.
After three straight scoreless innings, Higa delivered her third hit of the afternoon in the sixth with an RBI-single, bringing home fellow classmate
Payton Quinonez (Tulare, Calif.) while pushing the lead back to three, 4-1.
DSU refused to go away, trimming the margin with another run in the bottom six, 4-2.
Sophomore pitcher
Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) came in relief with another solid performance. The Arizona native picked up the win after tossing 3.1 innings with a game-high four strikeouts, including the final two DSU batters.
Uxua Modrego Lopez and Hailey Ramberg led the Lady Hornets with two hits each in a losing effort.
On April 13-14, Howard returns to The District for a three-game series against Coppin State. Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., on ESPN+, followed by a seven-inning contest Sunday (April 14) at noon.
