CARY, N.C. (March 24, 2024) – Howard University women's tennis team closed out the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Round Up with a 5-2 victory over Norfolk State (NSU) at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
With the victory, HU improved to 7-8 overall (2-1 MEAC) while the Spartans dropped to 2-10 (1-3 MEAC).
Howard opened the afternoon sweeping doubles play while taking an early 1-0 match lead.
Junior
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and
Imani Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y.) served as the club's No. 1 doubles team, knocking off NSU's Gabriela Davidescu and Laura Ruiz, 6-2.
Third-year Bison
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore
Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) blanked Norfolk State's Alessia Stan and Ioana Irina, 6-0.
Rookies
Ava Chambers (Wellington, Fla.) and
Lauren Oliver (Winston-Salem, N.C.) also put on a dominate performance, shutting out the Spartans' Sabina Maria Iurea and Isabella Cotrell, 6-0.
In singles competition, Grayson played in the No. 2 slot where she defeated Iurea in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 1-0 [10-5]).
Jean, Oliver and Pegram also won their respective singles matches in straight sets.
On April 5, Howard hosts Delaware State in a MEAC showdown at the Banneker Recreation Center in D.C. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
